Description & Mechanism of Action
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide, a stabilised analog of tuftsin, an endogenous immunomodulatory peptide, developed to resist rapid enzymatic degradation. In rodent studies, intranasally administered Selank crosses the blood-brain barrier and has been shown to upregulate BDNF mRNA expression in the hippocampus, a brain region central to memory and emotional regulation. Selank has also been reported to inhibit enkephalin-degrading enzymes, prolonging the activity of endogenous enkephalins at the synapse, and to allosterically modulate GABA-A receptor sensitivity, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission. Its tuftsin-derived origin has additionally directed research interest toward immune modulation, including effects on cytokine expression such as IL-6. The evidence base is predominantly from Russian rodent studies, with more limited independent international human-trial validation.
