Description & Mechanism of Action
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water for injection containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. Unlike plain sterile water, which must be used immediately once a vial is opened, the benzyl alcohol content inhibits bacterial growth, allowing a single vial to be used for multiple reconstitutions over a limited period. It has no pharmacological activity of its own — its sole function in a research setting is as a diluent for reconstituting lyophilised peptides into solution for further experimental use.
Applications in Research
- Reconstituting lyophilised research peptides into solution
- Preparing multi-use stock solutions for laboratory research
- General-purpose sterile diluent for peptide handling protocols
Handling, Reconstitution & Stability
- Use aseptic technique when withdrawing from the vial to avoid introducing contamination
- Wipe the vial stopper with an alcohol swab before each use
- Discard the vial after the manufacturer's stated in-use period, even though the preservative extends usable life beyond single-use sterile water
- Confirm compatibility with your experimental protocol — the benzyl alcohol preservative may be unsuitable for certain sensitive assay conditions
Precautions & Notes
- Not for injection into humans or animals — for laboratory research use only
- Benzyl alcohol preservative may interfere with some sensitive experimental protocols — confirm compatibility before use
- Discard if solution appears discoloured, cloudy, or contains particulate matter
